I ❤ Winter Coats

Thursday November 26, 2009

Every winter season, I somehow manage to buy seven or more new coats. I’ve just realised that this is sort of ridiculous and am trying not to let that happen this year.

coat
Down coat from PureDKNY; silk ribbon from Cloth House.

This is the only new coat from this year (though I know there’s another one coming from Visvim). If I could only keep one piece of outerwear, this will be the most practical choice. It’s warm; it’s light. It has a hood and is in water-proof fabric. The perfect one for London’s weather.

And some from the previous winters…

coat
M-65 jacket from Vanessa Bruno; squirrel brooch from Moschino.

Two years ago, I was walking around New York in this jacket just bought in Soho when I was stopped by a woman. She really wanted to know where it’s from as she’s been looking for one but couldn’t find anything to her taste. “Vanessa Bruno,” I told her. She gave me a look I could only describe as “WTF”. “Oh, that’s where I’m from,” she said. “Paris.” I guess she came to New York in search of a Travis Bickle jacket too then.

coat
Big button coat from Head Porter Plus; cotton scarf from Hermès x Liberty.

Whenever I wear this coat, I will pair it with something floral.

coat
Long coat from Dries van Noten; rosettes for horses from Portland Outdoor Store.

A sale purchase, and a very good one.

coat
Fake fur coat from agnès b.; double-faced satin ribbon from V V Rouleaux.

There is room for only one fake fur coat in my wardrobe and I’m very glad to have found this one.

coat
Peter Pan collar coat from The North Face; pointu scarf from Hermès.

One of my favourites since I got it in Tokyo last year. Perhaps you’re surprised to know the maker since it looks like a version of a classic swing coat. It’ll make sense when you look inside: the coat is lined with Gore Windstopper. From The North Face Japan black label, if I haven’t remember wrongly, this line is only available at the Omotesando Hills store.

Replies

Mausumi: More bows for you today.

graziella: It’s all about the packaging. The product has a very artificial fragrance which I hate.

Bardotty and Lauren: A totally unrelated note, my husband’s last name is Bunney and while I was typing Miss Bunny (the lip conditioner) the first time, I spelled it as Bunney…

Maeko: I’m afraid the oven will totally wreck it as it’s made of lacquer. But someone needs to make a rabbit-shaped pie dish for sure.

editor: Oh dear, but there’s always Tokyo.

Benji: I like that description. I didn’t notice it, but yes, the hearts!

i adore your dries van noten coat. i’ve been looking for a black one this year and so far found nothing inspiring at all.

  2. Bardotty says:

Ok, I’m completely sold on the down coat! I definitely need something warm for Patagonia this winter. Lovely-lovely-lovely coats and an even lovelier last name btw Bx

  3. jane says:

I love the way you accessorise all your coats – the Hermes scarves in particular are just perfect. I love the Head Porter Plus coat very much too.

  4. missmilki says:

I love all your coats! I have the opposite problem, I feel like I’ve been searching for years for the ‘perfect’ coat, and I haven’t found it yet!

  5. may says:

that apc dress from your 2008 post you linked to – saw it half-off at the front row closing down sale. regretting now.

  6. Carole says:

Oh I love your coats, I have too many myself, but stopped buying them here in NYC, where they are never warm enough for the harsh winter. I’m also coat addicted… Now I have one from the North face and a Shearling as it is the only thing that will stop the wind. I use the rest of them during Fall, and will start buy “normal “winter coats again if/when I move to a warmer place :)

I have a strange relationship to coats, or to all kinds of warm clothing for that matter, because I rarely ever freeze and wearing to much or to thick clothes makes me MELT. I can barely even wear long sleeves indoors at any given time of the year. But at the same time I really like how most coats and warm cozy autumn/winter-y clothing LOOK. you’ve got some really nice ones. Me, I stick to my black trench and a simple black woolen coat. I’m already wanting summer back so I can wear shorts again without getting wierd looks…

  9. keiko says:

omg, all of them look lovely. how fabulous it must be to be able to choose one every day a week :)

  10. I love your North Face coat. Why aren’t there more readily available coats out there which combines warmth, practicality and elegance?

  11. viv says:

most of your london coats are too thick for los angeles, but – whoa – love the Vanessa Bruno jacket. can you share the price point? can’t believe i’ve never explored her price points, either. all i have from her is one of those popular Lune bags. *rushes off to check stock lists in Los Angeles.*

  12. What beautiful coats! Especially love the vanessa bruno, the Moschino squirrel and the Hermes scarfs!

  13. Mausumi says:

I was about to comment on how lovely the first coat is with the bow when I saw your reply! :) It’s official; I’m a bow girl! ;)

  17. Clara says:

Oh i love the fake fur one so much. The peter pan one looks cute with the scarf too. ;)

  18. Bean says:

I’m exactly the same, already bought 4 so far. Really want a Twenty8twelve army coat too!

  19. Maeko says:

I am in love with all of your coats. I think every girl who lives in a cold climate needs to have a collection of good coats. Coats become the wardrobe we cannot truly don because it is so cold. If you have a fantastic coat, who cares what is on underneath? Like a good pair of shoes or a good shade of lipstick…
