Imaginings of China.

Realised in England.

Found in France (by the trader, not me).
The second of my Spitalfields Market find is a tin tray made by Baret Ware. I couldn’t find much information about the company but have been told by two sources that it is a piece from the fifties. I always find Chinoiserie pieces amusing.

manchai: Thank you for coming down yesterday. I hope your jiaozi turned out well.
pochi: Nice to meet you and I hope you will find some nice things to make from the Cuoca book!
natsuki: Have a good holiday (in London)! And see you sometime in January.
ksf, Sarah, enuwy, AL and Klacken: I’m glad you like the first photo because it’s my favourite picture of late. I have America and its extreme flag display to thank though.
tifanie: Thank you for the kind words. I’ll try to capture some interesting things in Tokyo when I go there later in December.
if jane: My aim will be to visit NYC in the summer-time next. I heard that it becomes a really different place.
editor: I had Jutta Neumann’s shop on my list but didn’t make it over. Like you, her work is not exactly to my taste but now I regret it after hearing your description of the shop.
Ell: It just stopped raining when I was going through Central Park and I have to admit my photos didn’t even capture the atmosphere at that time. It was almost misty in the distance.
July: Thank you for stopping by yesterday. I’ll love to visit Quincy and you sometime. In-N-Out burger: It is by no means a gourmet rendition of a burger but a fast food classic made well. The textures and flavours of the various elements come together very nicely. The buns are sweet and soft but toasted and crisp on the undersides (my only complaint was that it’s a bit sticky). The patty has “smoky” and “beefy” flavour. Lettuce and tomato were fresh, grilled onions added another flavour dimension and cheese, well, was cheese! The fries look underwhelmingly pale at first but are freshly cut and really grew on me. Another reason for the cult of In-N-Out is how they’ve managed to provide a mass product from a chain store environment (though a smaller regional chain) but still retain certain quirks. Tiny menuboard with only 3 choices of burgers (but a secret menu known by word of mouth that you can request), the bible references on their paper packaging, the In-N-Out safety pin on staffs’ aprons… I just want to go back there so I can say “Animal style Double-Double with Animal fries, please”! As for Jack in the Box, I can’t say because I’ve not been to one.
Maeko: I’ll look out for your pictures with the Diana lens!
Sue: It was sent to my home but addressed to my partner. I think he bought some badges.
wl: Here!
Mausumi: I read the Advent Calendar, thank you! So are you on a break now since you finished with the exams? I always love those days in school when we would bring in games to play in class (and make lots of noise).
A note on: chinoiserie, craft, kitchenware, my favourite things, old, polaroid slr680, style

Thanks for your message yesterday, I hope you got my vibes and it went well! Bx
Tommy, it was lovely to meet you. So kind of you to bring all the heavy books down!
I was so happy to find those 2 books that I took back home.
I only had a quick look at them at the cafe, but after I got back home, the more I read them, the more recipes I find that I would love to try out!!
That cuoca book was actually a big hit for me. Lots of little classic/popular baking recipes that I have been looking for. The kentaro book is also great!
I will try some recipes over the weekend with my daughter. :)
Oh, I recently purchased a recipe book called “a year in my kitchen”, published by the Petersham Nurseries. So many lovely recipes and I thought you might like it.
Send my regards to Alison, too.
Her cakes were soo sooo yummy (I especially loved the green tea cake!) and I will definitely come back for more!
I actually loved all your clothes, too. (I used to love Jessica Ogden stuff but it is now so difficult to find. Such a pity)
but I knew most of them wouldn’t just fit me….
Wish i was thinner!
heh, wouldn’t have guessed it from the other picture… I didn’t even pay attention to it. now that I see it, the detailing is gorgeous !
