Dieter Rams says good design…
…is innovative.
…makes a product useful.
…is aesthetic.
…makes a product understandable.
…is unobtrusive.
…is honest.
…is long-lasting.
…is thorough down to the last detail.
…is environmentally friendly.
…is as little design as possible.

Fe, kim, maria and editor: A little bit more of Tokyo will be coming via Lomo LC-A. Glad you are enjoying the pictures!

hiki: The Chinese tea place is on the 6th floor of Takashimaya if I didn’t remember wrongly. As for Gorakadan, I was lucky!

Naomi: Polished rice is white (the usual one) and unpolished is brown. Brown rice is supposed to be better for you as it retains the bran and germ, much like how wholewheat flour is nutritionally more beneficial than white flour. Usually only brown unpolished or white polished are available in the stores but at Isetan, you can customise the degree of polishing which is excellent!

Deb: Stuck? What happened? I was at Narita on the same day but we missed each other. I was out by 12 noon.

bollett: Happy new year! Enjoy Tokyo and any plans for London soon again?

if jane: I’m ill and I’m not usually easily ill. Other than that, it’s OK this year. Hope your start has been better!

ahhhhhh, this is good. this is like … visual food, truly.
though it can also be a little saddening. i feel like i have to work harder (than i used to) to find modern genius design in most areas, with the exception of clothes. thank goodness for your blog. ;)

ps curious why the banner change, or test change, and also, this exhibition you are showing reminds me a bit of the book ’super normal.’ are you familiar?

  3. beautiful, just beautiful.

  4. Thanks Tommy, i’m in love with these yellow and blue and red. And Buenos Aires is still a bit too far for me to go to the exhibition! Merci beaucoup* Juliette

I LOVE THIS! I really wish I could be in London to see this exhibit!
Did you know Jun Takahashi was inspired by Dieter Rams for his Undercover SS10? It was so beautiful. Maybe not quite the same kind of elegance as Rams… but somewhere in between the worlds of Rams and Takahashi, maybe. Anyway – amazing!

very crisp, clean, somewhat clinical. for me, when i hear of ‘dieter rams’ i don’t think of design, i think of my late, missed dobie/shephard Dieter.

    Ciao T,
We’re buying the plane tickets for next May. We’ll be staying in London for more than a week this time. I can’t simply wait. Last time we went to London was in May09 and it’s been soo soooo long…. I miss london more than ever in my life now.

I’m so happy that all the huge work made by Dieter Rams for Bräun has been so properly celebrated! Firstly with the homage by Jun Takahashi and his Collection SS’10 and now with this Exhibition in London. Super!!!

    take care_
