Good Things to Eat and Drink #6

I am uninterested in the debate over authenticity when it comes to food. Taste should be paramount. Hasn’t it become difficult to define authenticity as food culture continues to be shaped by immigration and adaptation?

b

Hence, I enjoy very much the resort-atmosphere Thai restaurant chain, Busaba Eathai. My favourite dishes are Thai calamari with ginger and peppercorn, and Chinese broccoli with garlic and shiitake, to go with Jasmine rice.

b

Pandan leaf tea with cashew and coconut cookie is the perfect ending to every meal.

gia (via contact form): I’m happy to know you like them and wrote to tell me so! Understand your English perfectly.

Bruce Fang (via contact form): Manufactum is a wonderful idea, I love it. Since I like writing about good things, maybe you can check back on occasion to see if there’s anything new. Here’s a start.

Orys (via contact form): Nice to hear from you!

khairudin (cia contact form): I’ve never come across fake Visvim so I don’t really know what to look out for compared to real ones. Besides the styling and design has changed quite a lot since the FBT is a long-running style. I’m sorry I can’t help. I just like wearing them.

The Storialist, Barbara, H, Benji, jing, if jane, Kitty, Clara, Alexia, Julia, Novi, Kiki, jocady and petoskystone: Maybe more Ferry adventures later this week. She loves being in a roll so much she gets into rolling position when placed on fabric. We hold and stroke her when she is in a roll and she really likes the attention.

Su-Lin: Ferry loves being in a roll, she can’t stop chirping. I was only passing by but now I have to go back to Harris’s for spam fritters!

fanny: I’ve seen gooseberries for sale quite a lot this year. I’ve never tried them. They give me a sour feeling. Are they?

christie: She has this maze made up of slinky wire and covered plastic but she uses it mainly for storing her treasures and meat stock. Sometimes, but rarely, she sleeps in it too. She’s quite a lazy ferret.

Sini: No lack of beautiful cakes in France though?

Jessie: At the moment, I am obsessed about Ottolenghi (a constant really), Paul Rothe & Sons (charming atmosphere) and A. Gold.

yang: Thank you for visiting. I wonder what the introduction in Milk said? 很想到中国走走,明年吧?

Sneaky Magpie: I saw a bottle of elderflower cordial from a small producer at a delicatessen but it was about £15 so when Alison and I saw this one at Waitrose we couldn’t believe the price…

Nikki: Glad to be of help. I haven’t been to Koya for a while.

Marina: The English breakfast was terrible, but I was starving. I’m sure I could do better at home but what a mess it would make. Ferry was actually very moody early last week but I think she’s cheered up since we discovered the ferret roll game.

aliceee:): Exactly, though I haven’t used mine for a while…

lotte: Thank you.

    Hi Tommy

I agree! I love Busaba Eathai too, especially the Pandan leaf tea and cashew & coconut cookie. The perfect respite during a shopping trip at Selfridges. Only problem is, I want to try everything on the menu. My eyes are always bigger than my belly!

to immigration & adaptation, i add the willingness & ability to grow/produce new foodstuffs. brings the concept of ‘homegrown’ to a new level. lovely photo of flowers & candles.

  3. Graziella says:

i love love love the photo of the flowers and candles! thai calamari with ginger and peppercorn is so delicious! I still have to try the pandan leaf tea. I think I’ll like it since I love pandan bread so much.

  4. Kay says:

I love the Thai calamari too!

this is my first time reading about pandan leaf tea. I love pandan so much! Wonder if I can find this in Singapore. I am still hunting for elderflower essence for tea (instead of tea leaves)

I was nodding away as I read your post. Totally agree with you. I love Busaba Eathai as well (the pandan leaf tea is one of my favourites), and whenever I take people there, I always warn them that while it isn’t what they would consider ‘authentic’ Thai food, it is very tasty.

BTW, not sure if you’re aware, your images can’t be viewed via RSS feed using Google Reader on a Mac.

I agree. Taste is much more important that whether the establishment serving it is authentic to the ethnicity and culture. Who cares so long as they achieve the tastes that the culture made?

I love reading your food posts.

    I’m so hungry now.

I don’t agree with Jia. I can see your images in my Reader just fine in Firefox for my Mac.

  8. Kim says:

I had broken images on your posts earlier today in Bloglovin’ in IE too, not sure why.
I agree with you on the taste vs authenticity thing. Like the Döner Kebab – faux Turkish food invented in Germany by immigrants, when done well it’s pretty tasty. Who cares whether it has been made for x generations if it tastes good :)

  9. Jessie says:

hmm…i’ll jot that down and try fit them all in my itinerary. thanks Tommy :)

  10. Carole says:

i agree, what is authenticity? as a french, and a french who loves to cook, i really appreciate a new tale on french cuisine.

  11. Carole says:

    i meant a new take.

  12. Rosa says:

as soon as i read the first sentence i immediately thought about Busaba! I know many people diss it as it’s not real Thai, but since i discovered it six years ago i fell in love with food. and we have the same favourites – i couldn’t live without the clamari!

  13. Sarah says:

I ate there like 3 times, would have gone there more often but the queue was always a bit of a put off. Nevertheless, loved the food there! :D

i heart busaba! it’s crack calamari i tell u! the panton st one is far less crowded than the wardour st. My staple is the dolly pad mee (which is really like maggi goreng that one finds in singapore). Yum :)
