Alternative Travel Guides

Tuesday July 31, 2007

I much, much prefer magazine travel issues to traditional travel guides. They are current and sensitive to must-hit spots, and who needs another book that tells you to visit the Tower Bridge in London, the Empire State Building in New York or the Eiffel Tower in Paris?

The Japanese edition of Madame Figaro makes special destination issues that are a firm favourite. Over the weekend, I discovered two English language magazines that have good potential too.

This issue of Perfect is all about New York and its inhabitants. Reading it on my daily commute this morning made me pine for NYC, badly! I’m surprised I haven’t heard about Perfect before, it’s a quality publication with the fingers on all the right pulses. Not sure where it’s based though, as the masthead credits a Swedish publisher but their website is UK-based. My only gripe is they can be a bit fast and loose with the grammar, spelling and facts (referring to Nan Goldin’s work as “his”, unforgivable!). Oh, and less fashion editorials but more news-based features would be nice.

Anyway, from Berlin, has a slick, modern design, but I lost interest after reading a few pages. Found the format too traditional. I’ll try to return to it tonight. The main motivation for getting this magazine is an article on Eataly, a slow food emporium newly opened in Turin.

So what do you rely on to point you in the right directions when you explore a new place?

joop: I met the girl who does Noodoll, she writes books too. Very interesting!

Bollettieri: I’m not planning it yet, just thinking it’ll be nice to take a holiday to Italy as I’ve never been there. I’m also thinking of the Scandinavian countries, or Spain.

    Ciao T,
having holidays in September in Italy is perfect: few tourists, still good weather.
If I were you, I would go to Tuscany (everywere is fine, but instead of Siena, I’d go to MAremma, a little bit wilder and uncommon…) for a break in one of the billions of the Agriturismo there are there. I’d spent there 3/4 days: swimmingpool, Fiorentina steaks, olive oil and relax.
Also Capri is really good! And Venezia too… And Sicily…

    ;-))))

    be well,

You can steal magazines by bringing into the book store little stickers with a name and address so that it look like you get the magazine delivered and your brought it with you INTO the store. Or, just act really confident and walk out with the magazine blatantly within view of the security guard.

We cut out articles on places we’d love to visit (or revisit) from magazines (from Marie Claire to Wallpaper*) or the weekend newspapers.

Which shop did you buy those magazines from? I wouldn’t mind checking them out.
