Poilâne sourdough quarter
I like buying bread at bakeries and farmers’ markets but if I was in a supermarket or Whole Foods, I’d pick Poilâne.

Échiré unsalted butter
If you want to eat something that is more than 80% fat, I think you have to be sure it’s absolutely delicious. Although I am hooked on Pamplie at the moment, it’s not as easily found in London. I rotate between a few brands (mainly French as I like cultured butter) and this week is Échiré.

Clarence Court Old Cotswold Legbar eggs
Apparently Old Cotswold Legbar hens lay eggs in pastel shades of turquoise, blue, olive, pink, peach and eau-de-nil but I’ve only ever had turquoise and blue in my carton. Sometimes olive. Never pink or peach and I’m not quite even sure what eau-de-nil is. Anyway the obsession is not with the shell colour but the yolk – such a deep, intense yellow it’s almost orange. Now I feel like eggs don’t taste as good if their yolks are pale yellow.

Alimonti wheat flour type “00″
I plan to make some pasta with this flour and I imagine the finely ground texture will be perfect for Chinese bread and dumpling wrappers too.

Tyrrells sweet chilli and red pepper potato chips
Tyrrells use different varieties of potatoes for their chips (although they’re commonly known as crisps in this country, Tyrrells has an explanation for why they chose to be different in their FAQ). This bag is made from Hermes potatoes and I also had the option of Lady Claire. Sweet chilli as a favourite flavour is a UK influence, I used to always go for sour cream and onion.

Jia: I play the DVD in VLC then grab the frames I want! It’s rather tedious.
Marie Belgium: Your English is perfectly understandable, don’t worry. Where did your parents get the “staples” bowl? I’ve never seen anything like it. I went, “What!?”, when I saw how it was fixed. Ha…
nico: A secret case study shelf sale? That sounds even more intriguing.
ai: Oh it’s really pretty. I always enjoy Zhang Yimou films no matter what the content are because they are such visual treats.
hiki: But my Japanese is like that of a 3-year-old child though and I can’t understand Japanese films, the conversations are too fast for me. What Chinese films do you like?
Carole: That’s a really good way to put it. I can be a loner as well but I like to have people around me.
Yen: 好看!张艺谋让我想起Sofia Coppola. Weirdly similar.
Thom: I find her to be the same character in all the roles I’ve seen her in but she’s really got it mastered. The most bizarre one was in Jasmine Women where she gave birth by the roadside. I don’t really meet up with people so often so it was really good to see you and Sharon. Looking forward to your take on Europe!
A note on: food, kitchen, kitchen talk, panasonic lumix dmc-g1, supermarket

re the film, I don’t know what it is about it but there is this quiet sorrow that make you relate to the characters when you least expect, and then you feel like crying.
wow, the eggs ! and the potato chips look funny with the snoozing mexican on the packaging. looks like a flavor that can work in sg !
Waitrose is the best. I remember only going to waitrose during 3rd year of uni after a bad experience with meat from Tescos. lol.
I want those eggs…. XD
I’m really-really envious for the poilane bread, ahh i love it soo much. and the eggs are very funny, I’ve never seen such before
I’ve recently found your blog and have spent some time going back (and back, and back, and back…) through your old posts. I just wanted to say I love the way you capture the world!
The bowl come from the “treasure” of my ancestors. My great-great-grandfather loves Asia, so we have many japanese engravings and some objects, like a “writing case” (there is a beautiful collection of “writing case” at V&A) and the famous old bowl. So the bowl come from Asia, my great-great-grandparents have travel around the world for their honeymoon and after but unfortunatly I don’t know any more… Just my cousins don’t will a broked bowl… Ha ha… And my family love the film “The Road home”.
Yummy the Poilâne bread !
Dear Tommy,
a kind of late comment on the film post but: any ideas / recommendations where I can buy a Chinese quilted jacket? I found some vintage ones on Etsy but they don’t pop up very frequently.
Thanks
A.
I love that comment on eggs. You’re so lucky your eggs come in pretty colours. We still only get the dull orange shade here in SG! As for the flour, do you make your pasta from scratch? That’s wonderful…
I love your photos, btw :D
Your comment about “eau de Nil” is interesting. Colour names are fascinating and often incredibly poetic too. I would love having a colour dictionnary (I love dictionnaries), that would be a lovely thing to delve into on grey rainy days. But I think at the end of the day there is probably no standard classification as it would vary with manufacturers, art schools, etc.
Kudos for the great photos & words, I love your blog
xoxo
Fantastic! These are some of my favourite things too. Try Waitrose or the John Lewis Food Hall in London for these products and other similar amazing products (e.g. Gail’s potato and rosemary bread….yum!)
Eau de nil is one of my favourite colours to wear, it’s a watery blue-green, works nice with all things purple. Apparently it’s what the Nile’s water used to look like (http://pigtown-design.blogspot.com/2007/06/eau-de-nil.html)
I like to use that flour too. I get deliveries of it from Ocado. This interesting post has reminded me to do an Ocado order!
Are these groceries expensive? Like your eggs. They look gourmet!
i love echire on a really nice baguette!! these are all so tempting!
Chinese films I like are “In the Mood For Love”, “Chunking Express” (obviously I like Wong Kar Wai), “周漁的火車”, “我的兄弟姐妹”, “小城之春”(田壮壮) -don’t know if they are correct but do you recognise them?
my mom always try to get these farm eggs tht have orange color yolk. according to her, it’s the best because it indicates that the hen is healthy and there’s no chemical engineered majingy taking part in it.
p/s: nice site you have, i found through garance dore. :]
those look to be the most perfect eggs on earth!
now i’m on a mad hunt to find them local.
Thank you!
love that bread & butter… don’t eat eggs… but you can’t go wrong with tyrells sweet chilli! good luck with pasta making, hope to see the results here.
is the Islington Waitrose where Sainsbury’s used to be??
i love the look of those eggs, and their name – ‘old cotswold legbar eggs’. perfect.
